Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act of 2000 (Excerpt)

Virginia Indian tribes have been working for federal tribal recognition status for many years. Federal recognition creates a system of government-to-government treaty and negotiation status. It also allows tribes to receive federal assistance for public works and health programs. This legislation, which did not pass the Senate, was an attempt by Virginia Congressman Jim Moran and others to enact federal recognition of Virginia Indian tribes. It shows some ways that individuals, organizations, and lawmakers attempt to influence public policy.
