C-SPAN: Voter Focus Groups

In this video, Democratic pollster Peter Hart discusses the importance of voter focus groups in understanding an election. As he puts it, to make sense of an election, "You have to understand as much of anything not what's coming from just the head, but also what's coming from the gut and the heart....I think that's what focus groups allow you to do."

What are focus groups? What kind of information do they give you? How might this be useful in an election?
