Governor Kaine Announces 50 New Jobs for Halifax County

description

Sometimes, states "bid" for different companies to locate their manufacturing plants or jobs in that state. In this case, Virginia pledged $260,000 to help a bath fixture company create a manufacturing plant in Halifax county. In return, LABSCO Bathware, Inc. agreed to invest $1.7 million in Halifax county, create 50 new jobs, and save 280 others.

In this example, what is the relationship between government and private businesses? How does Virginia benefit from having a LABSCO Bathware plant in Halifax county? What are some potential benefits or problems arising from Virginia's financial investment in a private company?
