Distribution of Coal Areas in Virginia

description

Coal mining has become a controversial issue, due to both environmental and economic concerns. While some point to the harmful effects of both coal mining and the carbon emissions from burning coal, others point out that coal may be cheaper than many other energy sources. Coal also provides jobs to people in coal-mining regions.

This map shows coal mining regions in Virginia. How might the geographic location of coal mining affect the economy of those areas?

Other sources on this website discuss Governor Kaine's energy plan for Virginia. Can you find those sources? What role does coal play in future plans for energy in Virginia?
